Traffic diverted in Chandigarh for farmer protest today

3,500 policemen deployed, no permission for protest in Chandigarh, says SSP.

In light of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) protest, including the ‘Chandigarh Chalo’ march, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory for Wednesday, outlining traffic regulations on key road stretches to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety.

According to the police, traffic restrictions may be imposed on several major routes, including Zirakpur Barrier, Faidan Barrier, Jail Road (Sector 50/51), Mattaur Barrier (Sector 51/52), Kajheri Chowk (Sector 52/53), Furniture Market (Sector 53/54), Badheri Barrier (Sector 54/55), Palsora Barrier (Sector 55/56), Naya Gaon Barrier, and Mullanpur Barrier. The Chandigarh Police has advised commuters to use alternate routes to avoid congestion and inconvenience. Emergency vehicle movement will be facilitated to ensure uninterrupted access to medical and essential services.

For real-time traffic updates and alternate route suggestions, the police have encouraged people to follow the official social media handles of Chandigarh Traffic Police on X (@trafficchd), Instagram (@trafficchd), and Facebook (@ChandigarhTrafficPolice).

Authorities have urged residents to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with traffic regulations during the protest, the police said. SSP Chandigarh Police Kanwardeep Kaur said the protesting farmer unions have not been granted permission to hold a protest in Chandigarh. Meanwhile, we have made elaborate arrangements to deal with the law-and-order situation. A force of 3,500 policemen is being deployed across different areas of Chandigarh,” the SSP said.
